The world of professional multi-track audio recording has seen huge changes in the past decade. At a time when continued access to multi-track Masters has become vital to new and growing revenue sources for the music industry, it is becoming increasingly obvious that the long-term accessibility of these recorded assets is very much at risk. The usual archival problems of tape failure, damage, and loss have been compounded by the continued appearance, widespread adoption, and subsequent disappearance of a wide variety of digital recording formats. The growing level of complexity and the specialized technical know-how required to verify, archive, and track these extremely valuable recordings has simply grown beyond the ability of record labels to manage in-house.
